In 1967 Buick introduced it's second generation V8's to replace the
Nailhead design that was in existence since 1953. Almost from the beginning of the
new powerplants, high performance cylinder heads where being tested by Buick Engineers.
Head engineer Dennis Manner (designer of the 455) and his team began the Stage 2
project during their lunch hours, and spare time, since the project wasn't recognized by
the Buick Division until later. An early design incorporated modified intake and
exhaust ports, but an intake manifold was never developed for this head. A second
design was developed which would use the same intake as the Stage 1, but would require
special tube headers for the unique oval port exhaust. These Stage 2 heads were
produced in limited numbers (approx. 75 sets) during 1969 and 1970, during those years
only a few got to the streets. A few sets were used on factory test cars, these few cars
were the only Stage 2 cars assembled by Buick, and these cars included the entire Stage 2
package, which included a radical cam, that was almost too hot for street use, Forged 11:1
Compression ratio pistons, 2 1/8" headers made by Kustom Headers, an Edelbrock B4B
intake manifold, and a Holley 850 or a Rochester Super Stock Quadrajet, along with the
infamous Stage 2 Hood Scoop. In 1972 Buick made the Stage 2 Package public and
notified all dealers of their availability. At that time these parts could be
purchased in any combination over the counter.
